Just about everyone that watches any amount of television news would have seen the video right now. It is a familiar scene that plays out on high school football fields across the state of Texas. Friday Night Lights, if you will.

But this night was different. Video footage that was being kept by one of the training staff members caught something more sinister than the ordinary pushing and tackling associated with High School Sports. As the camera was rolling two Football Players for Marble Falls High School set their sights on the Referee and then it happened – one of players runs full force into the back of the ref, blindsding him, and the other player piles on top.

This we all of have seen…over and over and over again on the news cycle. So what now? Who will be held responsible. Will the kids get suspended, expelled? What about the coach?

Here is what we know about where this is all going:

Northside Independent School District athletic director Stan Laing has told news outlets that video of the incident was “VERY disturbing.” Laing said the district is investigating what led up to the incident.

The title of a purported video of the incident claims the ref had been targeted because of a bad call.

The team from John Jay High School in San Antonio was playing Marble Falls High School in Marble Falls, located about 90 miles north of San Antonio.

Before the referee was hit, two Jay players had been ejected on separate plays.

The incident occurred with approximately a minute left in Friday’s game, according to Marble Falls coach Matt Green.

Marble Falls was trying to run out the clock and called for a handoff toward the left side of the line of scrimmage, according to the Express-News.

The penalties stemming from the incident gave Marble Falls a first down. John Jay lost the game 15-9.

Marble Falls coach Matt Green said John Jay coach Gary Gutierrez apologized after the game.

“I’ve coached 14 years and I’ve never seen anything like it,” Green said.

The referee was “very upset” and “wanting to press charges,” Austin Football Officials Association secretary Wayne Elliott told The Associated Press.

Elliott said he was seeking guidance from the state officials association, adding, “the first thing we want is that those two kids never play football again.”

The referree’s name has still not been released.

Former Dallas Police Officer Quaitemes Williams has been convicted of official oppression for an incident where he beat and kicked a handcuffed suspect in the head during a traffic stop for an invalid license plate. He was subsequently fired; now he could face up to a year behind bars.

Official Oppression is a class A Misdemeanor punishable by up to a Year in jail. However, he will be eligible for probation and I would be shocked if he did more than a few days in jail (if any).

Williams stopped a suspect in the 9400 block of Abrams Road and noticed his license plate didn’t match the description of his vehicle. He determined the suspect, Rodarick Lyles, was driving with a suspended license and had warrants out for his arrest.Williams and two other officers tried to arrest Lyles, but he resisted. There was a struggle and the suspect ended up falling on the officer.

Following the incident, Police Chief Brown gave the following statement: “Officer Williams could not disengage from the physical altercation. He was hurt from the fall. He became angry. After Mr. Lyles was handcuffed, they described him as out of control. Our training won’t overcome a person that becomes out of control just because someone fell on you and caused you pain. We are in physical confrontations all the time when dealing with suspects. And some of the times we’re in pain. And we’re in sometimes extreme pain. The response can’t be when the suspect is defenseless and handcuffed to kick a person in the head or even to Mace a person in response to your physical pain. We have to be more professional, more disciplined than that,” Chief Brown said.

Thank God we have video evidence from dash cams. Assholes like this officer would in many instanced get away with thing like this if they did not. I think it is time to say enough is enough. We need to make these types of offenses felonies that require a minimum jail sentence as a condition of any probationary sentence. Otherwise, whats the worst that happens? Guys like officer Williams will get fired and get slapped on the wrist?

Too many officers have a smug sense of entitlement and the punishments currently in place are insufficient to deter such despicable actions!
